PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – SEPTA officials were out this morning to warn passengers of the danger of texting while walking.

SEPTA holds these safety blitzes every so often. This time they visited the regional rail station at Temple University to discusses what they’re calling “distracted commuting”.

“People with their face buried in their cell phone or listening to music and just kind of stumbling along,” SEPTA’s Dan Walden said. “They’ll step into the street or into the track area, very often close to a passing train or bus.”

Walden says these incidents happen several times a year, sometimes with tragic consequences.

The goal today is to remind commuters they need to keep their eyes and ears open around rails, platforms and crosswalks.
